Let’s twerk!
The list of child celebrities who have grown up in the media spotlight and seemingly gone off the rails continues to grow. Miley Cyrus is the latest case in point, immediately preceded by Justin Bieber. Prior to that there was Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Macaulay Culkin, Drew Barrymore …and so it goes on.
Does the media have a role in causing them to go wild, with the endless attention going straight to their head? Indeed, does it have a responsibility to let them have a bit of downtime, a bit of normality? Or does it secretly rub its hands when it hears of another outrageous occurrence?
What of the PR team surrounding them? Are they simply not doing a good enough job in protecting the reputation of their client? Not having the foresight to spot potential issues before they arise? Or perhaps such behaviour and public meltdowns are all part of a cleverly conceived PR plan to re-launch or redefine them as they approach greater maturity
One way of looking at it is that they are achieving their goals – after all, we’re still all talking about them. Perhaps ‘the twerk’ will turn out to be Miley’s best career move yet.
