Having recently generated some coverage in the national media for a Clareville client I started thinking back to when I generated my first ever piece of coverage in a national paper. This was way back when I was still slim, had shiny glossy hair and wore high heeled boots!
I was so excited and remember it like it was yesterday though realistically it was more like 10 years ago.
The Guardian newspaper wanted a case study for a technology based client. I had the client; I had the case study but was it enough?
I wrote my pitch to the journalist, a bit too cheerily and excited (as most PRs are when they are young, inexperienced and want to impress) and then just before hitting the ‘send’ button I said a little prayer. I knew the journalist would get hundreds of emails in response to this, but could I pull this one out of the bag ? Well on this occasion I did!
In a two-page article in The Guardian, when it was still a full sized paper I might add, I achieved, wait for it … a total of one line with my client’s name and tag line in it – I’ve never been so happy! I still have the coverage in a file somewhere from all those years ago.
The excitement of generating coverage for your clients in any media, in particular national newspapers, never leaves you. It’s what I do, what excites me and what pushes me to try and achieve that next big hit.
